Different Types of Glass

Many people think that glass is just glass.  But, looking around, you know there is a difference between the glass used in your fish aquarium or the windows of your house, compared to the type of glass in your car.  Even the front and back windshields are a different type glass than the side windows.  So just what is the difference?

SAFETY GLASS is a term that describes two types of glass: TEMPERED and LAMINATED.

All glazing follows strict guidelines, taking every precaution to protect the consumer.  Your safety, and the safety of your family, guests and visitors, is a responsibility that we take very seriously.  We will only replace glass in conformance with both the federal statute and local building codes.  For reasons of public safety, and because Creekside Glass and Mirror rigidly adheres to the law, we may be forced to alter the type of glass we use in a job to conform to local, state and federal safety standards.

Know what you are paying for and make sure your building is not just an accident waiting to happen.  Here are a few tips for understanding that GLASS IS NOT JUST GLASS.

LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS is two pieces of double strength glass (1/8") sandwiched together with a plastic laminate.  Laminated, unlike tempered glass, can be cut. This is a soft glass and breaks easily. Characteristics of this glass include its spider webbing effect and that it stays in place when broken.  It is required to have an ANSI label in one of the corners for safety identification.

TEMPERED SAFETY GLASS is heat treated glass to increase its strength and cause a unique fracture pattern.  When broken, this glass fractures into very small fragments, reducing the likelihood of injury. Tempered glass cannot be altered in size.  Like laminated glass, tempered glass is required to have a ANSI label in one of the corners for safety identification.

PLATE GLASS (ANNEALED) has the characteristic of breaking into large shards of glass when broken.  It may NOT be used where safety glass is required by local and federal glazing codes.
